Resilience: What it is and how to build it.

Resilience may be a term you’ve heard before (or not) as it seems to be popping up in more conversations these days. However, although some people know that resilience has something to do with overcoming hard times, not many people know what contributes to it and how to build it into their everyday lives.

A topic I often discuss with clients is locus of control- internal versus external - and how people understand how control is accessed, either coming from within or from forces outside of yourself. Harnessing your locus of control and finding ways to connect to the power inside can be a potent tool for change.

Failure is another subject that often comes up and what’s interesting is that when people come to the realization that it is not necessarily an action that causes them to feel as though they have failed, but their mindset, that really opens doors for them. Did you know that neuroscientists have discovered that mistakes make our brains grow? What is meant by growth is an increase in connectivity and potential productivity; new pathways are formed in the brain and/or preexisting pathways are strengthened.

This article discusses resilience, locus of control and failure in more detail and it offers advice on how to apply some skills to your life right now. I hope you find it helpful.
